2017-18 Honors

Students Honored

Five SUNY Oswego Theatre students were honored at the opening reception for Urinetown on April 21, 2018 for their excellence over the previous academic year.

Shelby Gilbert

Sophomore Shelby Gilbert was awarded the Sandra Kelly Mincher ’65 Memorial Endowed Scholarship for her achievements in the past year.

This honor was established by John Mincher, Emeritus Professor of Theatre, in memory of his wife, Sandy. As a student, Sandy was active in theatre and the Blackfriars student organization. She was also a member of Alpha Psi Omega, the Theater honor society. The scholarship will honor Sandy’s career as an educator and provide support to a student interested in pursuing a career in educational or professional theatre.

To qualify for this award, a student must:
a. Be a matriculated student in good academic standing.
b. Have a stated interest in pursuing educational or professional theatre as a career.
c. Be active in the Theatre department.
d. Preference will be given to Theatre majors or minors, or related minors, such as expressive arts therapy, live events, etc.
e. Apply in freshman, sophomore or junior year to receive the award the following academic year.
f. The student will submit an essay on his/her career goals in professional or educational theatre.

Additionally, Shelby was also honored with a Certificate of Merit from the KCACTF Region 2 respondents for her work as assistant stage manager on Boeing Boeing.

The Sandra Kelly Mincher Scholarship

Megan Hickey

Senior Megan Hickey was honored at the KCACTF Region 2 Festival for her work as student director on the department's Fall 2017 student honors production of Boeing Boeing.

Cadi Hannold

Senior Cadi Hannold was honored as this year's recipient of the Ola J. Ricketts Award for Theatre Excellence, awarded to a graduating student of high caliber, academic excellence, and an outstanding theatre creator.

Devin Croad

Junior Devin Croad is the 2018 recipient of the Benita Zahn '76 Theatre Fund Scholarship.

This award, gifted by alumnus Benita Zahn, is intended to assist an outstanding student with the intention of the funds supporting their Senior Capstone Project.

Ryan Benson Smith

Junior Ryan Benson Smith was awarded the 2018 Kathleen Pendergast Memorial Scholarship. 

The late Dr. Kathleen Pendergast taught in the Theatre Department from 1961 until her retirement in 1977. In addition to her consummate knowledge of classical theatre and refined directorial skills, she brought a curiosity and genuine respect for all theatre that told stories in vibrant visual terms by actors who boldly committed to their craft. Dr. Pendergast taught classes in theatre history, acting and oral interpretation. This award will be given to a junior based on his or her activities in the Theatre Department program during their previous year. To qualify for this award, a student must:
a. Demonstrate a commitment to a professional career as an actor, director or teacher of theatre arts
b. Be a fully matriculated student in attendance at SUNY Oswego
c. Be enrolled as an Acting/Directing Theatre major, and have completed at least one semester at Oswego
d. Submit a cover letter and resume. The letter should address your involvement in and commitment to theatre activities in the Acting/Directing area and articulate future goals 
e. Submit three letters of recommendation that speak to your creative work and meaningful involvement in Theatre
