The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching offers various workshops and seminars for new faculty and staff. While these workshops are designed for new members of the college community, any faculty or staff member is welcome to attend. Fall semester workshops include:
Thursday, September 6 - "Jumpstart on Teaching" - John Kane (4:00 - 5:00 pm, 123 Penfield)
This is a monthly meeting of the faculty group participating in the COIL program. Any faculty interested in exploring the development of a COIL class is encouraged to attend.
9/14 or 9/15 - At this meeting, the state of current COIL projects will be discussed, workshop plans will be discussed for the semester, and course development contracts will be distributed to those developing courses for this academic year 2014. (There are two meeting times listed to accommodate diverse faculty schedules. The same topics will be discussed at each meeting.)
In this workshop, we will examine ways of using your iPhone, iPad, or android device to display PowerPoint, Prezi, Beamer, or other presentations. This will include a discussion of mobile presentation (and editing) apps and remote desktop applications that will allow you to wirelessly control a computer connected to a projector.
This workshop is intended for advisors in the Starfish Pilot. You will learn how to setup your office hours and profile in Starfish; learn how notification about flags raised work, and how to close the loop on those flags.
These workshops will provide faculty, professional staff and students with the information that they need to effectively report suspected cases of sexual harassment and sexual assault.

This Webinar will provide teaching and support faculty with some basic information about the online tutoring services available through the STAR-NY Consortium. We'll touch on the history and theoretical underpinnings of the program, and discuss elements such as training, quality control, student response, and benefits to participating campuses.

Low-stakes testing is a pedagogical technique that has been found in numerous studies to be effective in enhancing student learning. In this workshop, some of the evidence for this approach will be summarized. A variety of techniques will be discussed that allow this technique to be efficiently used to improve student short-term and long-term learning outcomes without requiring more work from faculty.
In this workshop, Doug Hemphill will discuss alternatives to traditional textbooks. As part of this discussion, he will describe how he created his own electronic textbook for an online physics class.
This workshop will focus on an examination of common myths about teaching and learning that are shared by many faculty and students. Evidence suggests that many of these myths can actively interfere with the learning process.
