Education: Prof. Mian received his MBA and Ph.D. in Business Administration from the George Washington University, his MS in Management Science from Northwestern University, and his BS Physics and MS in Chemical/Energy Engineering from Punjab
University.

Teaching: Dr. Mian's teaching interests include strategic management and business policy, entrepreneurship and new venture development, management of technology and innovation. He currently teaches the following courses:

  • MGT 490 - Entrepreneurship Capstone Project
  • MGT 495 - Management Policy and Simulation

Research

Dr. Mian's research activities cover:

  • New venture creation and startup support through business and technology incubation mechanism (incubators, accelerators, science parks, tech-hubs, maker spaces)
  • Entrepreneurial university and its role in innovation ecosystems development
  • Entrepreneurship education, support for student entrepreneurs and STEM startups
  • Entrepreneurial management of SMEs and family businesses
  • Strategic/top-management decision-making

Dr. Mian has edited/co-edited several special issues of scholarly journals (IJSB, SBEJ, J. Technology Transfer, Technovation) and was Associate Editor of JSBM. He has held elected positions in the Academy of Management and was chair of the INFORMS technology, entrepreneurship, and innovation division. He has published 4 scholarly books and is the author of 70 research articles; he has had more than 150 national/international conference and academic workshop presentations, including numerous keynote speeches.

Dr. Mian was inducted to the SUNY Distinguished Academy as Distinguished Professor (2022). Prior to this Mian earned SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities (2012), and SUNY Oswego President’s Award in Scholarship and Creative Activities (1997).

He has consulted with governmental and international research and academic organizations including OECD (STI and Entrepreneurship), US (USAID, NYS), Sweden (VINNOVA), Germany (IFMOS), Pakistan (HEC, LUMS, IBA), Mexico (El Collegio de Mexico), Canada (IDRC), and others.
