WRVO commemorates Juneteenth with radio special 'What Is Owed?'

WRVO Public Media is commemorating Juneteenth with the one-hour radio special "What Is Owed?" exploring the history of reparations demands and efforts to repay victims of systematic oppression against Black Americans.

Airing at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19, the special emphasizes the voices of Black activists fighting for reparations since the nation's founding.

Lake Effect Cafe in Penfield Library announced summer hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, through July 26.

The cafe serves Starbucks beverages, fresh baked goods, soup and grab-n-go options.

Shineman Oswego Scholarships to support local residents attending SUNY Oswego

Thanks to underwriting from the Richard S. Shineman Foundation, a new scholarship will support Oswego County students attending SUNY Oswego, starting this fall.

For fall 2024, the Shineman Oswego Scholars program will award 25 scholarships to local students for $2,500 per year for up to four years. Starting in fall 2025, the program will provide 10 $1,250 renewable scholarships across the county.

Each of the county’s nine school districts has two recipients, with another seven awards available in open competition throughout the county.

Penfield Library resource sharing (ILL) undergoing summer maintenance

In an effort to maintain patron privacy and keep the ILLiad database (one of the systems used for processing Interlibrary Loan requests) current and running efficiently, Penfield Library will perform a series of procedures during the summer of 2024. No interruption in service is expected as a result of this work.

Mallory Bower named director of EXCEL

I am pleased to announce that Mallory Bower has been appointed as director of EXCEL: Experiential Courses and Engaged Learning after serving as interim director for the past year.

Mallory joined the SUNY Oswego community over 10 years ago. Most recently she served as the assistant director for experiential curriculum and assessment in EXCEL. She supported the department through experiential curriculum development and strategic planning for high-level retention programs.

Openings available for Sheldon Institute, STEAM Camp summer programs

Registration is open for the two youth-focused hands-on learning opportunities in Barbara Shineman Summer Scholars Summer Camps' Sheldon Institute and STEAM Camp.

With these programs, the goal is for children to learn, explore and have fun. 

For either camp, young participants can be dropped off between 8 and 9 a.m., with student pick-up running until 5 p.m.

Cooper Hall network maintenance scheduled for June 13

On Thursday, June 13, from 8:30 to 11 a.m., Campus Technology Services (CTS) will perform network maintenance. Cooper Hall's wired and wireless connections to the campus network and Internet will be unavailable during this timeframe.
