The undergraduate catalog states, as college policy, that “regular class attendance is obligatory.” Composition courses frequently involve your practicing writing skills in class and your commenting on classmates’ writing; therefore, your regular and prompt attendance is a necessity. The nature of the course is such that you cannot make up a missed class by borrowing the notes of a classmate. Consequently, the Department of English and Creative Writing has adopted the following policy for attendance in both ENG 101 and ENG 102.

  • You are allowed a maximum of six absences in a MWF course or four absences in a TTh course (the equivalent of two weeks of the term)
  • All absences, excused or unexcused, are regarded equally
  • If you exceed the maximum number of permitted absences before the end of the drop period, you will be asked to withdraw from the course (with a “W”)
  • If you exceed the maximum number of permitted absences after the end of the drop period, you will receive an “E” in the course except in extraordinary circumstances consistent with the late drop policy of the Dean’s Office of your division
