Session Title:  Dr. Sheldon's Flexible Revolution
Presenter: Bob Schell
Room: CC 201
Most discussions of Edward Austin Sheldon and the Oswego State Normal and raining School focus on the on the first twenty years of our institution's existence.  The common primary sources ignore the education revolution that continued through the end of the nineteenth century.  Fortunately, faculty members Richard Piez (1893-1937) and Donald Snygg (1937-1967) each published an examination of the "Oswego movement" in the 1940's that extended the story into the twentieth century.  We will look at Dr. Sheldon's revolution through their eyes as they explore the waning of object teaching, the introduction of the first Kindergarten training program, the inception of science education, the "central curriculum," biology, physiology, and physical culture, and ultimately manual training.  Doctors Piez and Snygg, the first two chairs of our Psychology Department, will provide the unique perspectives of social scientists as they enable us to understand our heritage.  You may add this to your Google calendar by clicking here:
