Admission requirements

In order to be eligible for admission to SUNY Oswego, international applicants must satisfy all of the following requirements:

  1. Applicant possesses the equivalent of a U.S. high school diploma;
  2. Applicant demonstrates a minimum grade point average (GPA) equivalent to 2.5 on a 4.0 grading scale;
  3. An English proficiency score of 71 TOEFL or 6.0 IELTS is required for non-native speakers of English. A Duolingo English Score (DET) of 100 is also currently accepted. Additional scores may be considered on a case-by-case basis; please view this webpage for a list of English proficiency scores that are currently accepted for admission to the university.
  4. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program: If your English proficiency results do not meet our minimum requirements or you do not feel confident in your English abilities prior to attending SUNY Oswego, you have the option to enroll in the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program online. You can book your course directly with our partner, OIDI, via this link. If the additional components of your application are acceptable, you can be conditionally admitted to SUNY Oswego by showing proof of enrollment in this EAP program. In order to be fully admitted to SUNY Oswego you must successfully complete the EAP program and meet our minimum requirements.  

Standardized exams (SAT or ACT): Note that international applicants are not required to provide SAT/ACT scores in order to be considered for admission to SUNY Oswego. Students who submit these scores, however, may be eligible for additional merit scholarships.

Native speakers of English: Native English speakers are not required to demonstrate proof of English language proficiency provided that the applicant meets the following criteria:

    1. Applicant is a citizen of Australia, The Bahamas, Canada, Guam, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Nigeria, Singapore, Sierra Leone or the United Kingdom; and
    2. Applicant considers him/herself to be a native speaker of English and indicates this on the SUNY or Common Application; and
    3. Applicant was instructed entirely in English, at least at the secondary (high school) level.

Annual expenses

Undergraduate tuition and mandatory fees for international students for the 2023-2024 academic year are $18,679, for an estimated total of $38,619 USD per academic year (including tuition, mandatory fees, room, meals, insurance, books, incidentals). Scholarship information

All international students applying to SUNY Oswego are eligible to be considered for generous scholarships at the time of application. No separate scholarship application is required.

Apply online

Choose one of the two options listed below to apply for admission to SUNY Oswego. Both applications require a non-refundable $50 fee, as well as a teacher/counselor evaluation. Applicants who complete the SUNY Application are required to also complete and submit the SUNY Supplemental Application

Required documents

The following documents are required as part of your application for admittance to SUNY Oswego:

      1. Official transcripts from all previously-attended institutions at the high school and university level, if applicable;
      2. Proof of English proficiency (see Admission requirements section above);
      3. A SUNY Supplemental Application (if completing the SUNY Application);
      4. Other materials, such as a Gap and College after High School Statement, may also be required on a case-by-case basis.

IMPORTANT: Students needing additional English preparation will be advised and placed accordingly. Students scoring below the required levels will need intensive English study on campus prior to admission. SUNY Oswego’s Intensive English Program is offered year-round.

Deadline

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. However, applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible in order to receive the fullest possible consideration.

Conditional admission

SUNY Oswego offers conditional admission to the university based on successful completion of the Intensive English Language Program (IEP). Sessions are offered in the fall, spring, and summer. For more information, please contact esl@oswego.edu
