National communication honor society recognizes new members, opens spring applications

The Sigma Pi chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the national communication honor society, inducted four new members in all 2023. These members are:

- Katie Karlen, public relations, Class of 2025
- Emily Cornell, communication, Class of 2024
- Lethe White, broadcasting and mass communication, Class of 2024
- Tina Cooper, strategic communication master's degree program

Applications now open for Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship (Gilman) Program is pleased to launch the March 2024 application cycle with a deadline of Thursday, March 7. The Gilman Program enables U.S. undergraduate students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity.

Oz Thrift Spring Sale offers bargains

The Office of Sustainability starts the semester with the Oz Thrift Spring Sale, filled with new-to-you bargains and treasures through this weekend.

The bi-annual thrift sale, this time in Mackin Hall Lounge 1C on the east side of campus, continues its run from noon to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26 and 27.

Note that Saturday is bag sale day, where visitors can pay $5 for all they can fit in a provided bag.

Call for Nominations: Hubert B. Smith Diversity Scholarship

The Hubert B. Smith Diversity Scholarship will be awarded to up to four students for the next academic year, 2024-2025. Each recipient will receive a minimum of $1,000.

This award honors Hubert B. Smith, retired assistant provost and director of the Office of Learning Support (now the Office of Learning Services), for his many years of service in the promotion of human diversity and academic excellence at SUNY Oswego.

The campus can find a new and improved Laker Life experience, as SUNY Oswego has partnered with CampusGroups on the university's official engagement tool.

With this updated app, members of the campus community can find belonging outside the classroom through a dynamic feed of co-curricular events, student organizations, leadership development activities, campus resources and much more.

Advisement Center offering new after-hours service

The Advisement Center will offer after-hours advising for the Spring 2024 semester. After-hours advising will allow students to get their academic advising questions answered outside the normal Advisement Center operating hours.

This new service will be held on Tuesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m and Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m to 6 p.m in the Advisement Center (151 Marano Campus Center). After-hours advising will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 30, by appointment only.

Auditions open for campus ‘Addams Family’ production

The SUNY Oswego Theatre Department will hold auditions on Feb. 2 and 3 for campus and community members to participate in the spring musical “The Addams Family.”

For the show, which will run April 16 to 21 on the Waterman Theatre stage in Tyler Hall, theatre professor Jonel Langenfeld will direct the production, with music faculty member Amanda Li providing musical direction. Julie Ano and Stefanie Standish will serve as choreographers.

Campus Recreation sets spring activities

Campus Recreation is back with a variety of exciting events this semester, starting this week with goat yoga.

One-day events include:

Goat Yoga
Wednesday, Jan. 24, Swetman Gym

Lakers will have the opportunity to partake in an instructor-guided yoga session, all while enjoying the company of lively goats and their handlers. 
Four half-hour sessions will be offered, to up to 50 students. These classes are beginner friendly. 

Laker Thrive Series for Employees to continue providing healthy activities

The Laker Thrive Series for Employees health and wellness initiative will continue this spring with a series of enriching activities aimed at promoting well-being and fostering community.

All activities are free to all employees, and serve as a complement to the many wellness offerings the university provides students. Some events might require registration due to a limited number of spots available due to activity space.
