Project Serve: Aug. 23
Students, faculty and staff prepared materials to get ready for the sheet mulch, hugelkultur, and demo bed installation at the PLL. Volunteers prepared cardboard to lay on the site and building retainer walls for the demo bed out of willow branches they help harvest.

Sheet Mulch and Hugelkultur Installation: Oct. 4
To prepare the PLL site, we first had to build the soil. We layered more than 400 yards of compost and woodchips and over 2,000 broken-down cardboard boxes to create a nutrient-dense and weed resistant foundation for our lab. Additionally, we installed Hugelkultur beds to manage stormwater run-off. For more information on Hugelkulture and other nitty-gritty details of permaculture in practice, watch this excellent video from Edgewood Gardens. Also, check out the lovely Hugelkultur schematic drawn by our own Kate Spector on our Living Lab page.

For any volunteer opportunity, please come prepared with closed toed shoes, weather appropriate work clothes, water bottle and work gloves if you have your own pair.
