lisa Descartes, a SUNY Oswego senior public justice major, last summer thought about the need for faculty and alumni connections among students of color seeking to move on to graduate school or careers -- daunting frontiers for any student near graduation, but particularly for minority and first-generation college students.

Award-winning Lt. Brian Murphy, who responded to a 2012 mass shooting, will relay his experiences in “What You Do Every Day: A Conversation on Safety and Preparedness” on March 11 at SUNY Oswego.

For her latest book, which looks at the legacy of the Columbine school shootings two decades later, SUNY Oswego criminal justice faculty member Jackie Schildkraut said the foundation comes from a quote in the Wall of Healing at the Columbine Memorial -- a place of remembrance that will be supported withproceeds from the book.

SUNY Oswego has begun transitioning its public justice major to criminal justice, a move that modernizes the program, boosts its rigor in alignment with national standards and makes its name more recognizable to graduate schools and employers.

Donations by 1974 SUNY Oswego alumnus David Cutler have brought a fund to support the college's public justice program and student experiences to $1 million.

"Lessons from Tragedy: A Conversation on School Safety and Preparedness" will feature the retired principal of Columbine High School and a survivor of the Virginia Tech shooting who then created a national support foundation, at 5 p.m.
