SUNY Oswego President Peter O. Nwosu has been named to City & State’s 2025 Upstate Power 100, a list recognizing leaders who are shaping the future of politics, policy, education, business, and community life across the region. The annual ranking highlights individuals whose work is driving progress in Upstate New York.

SUNY Oswego President Peter O. Nwosu was one of five educational leaders elected to the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Board of Directors on Nov. 17 during the organization’s Annual Conference for Presidents and Chancellors in Nashville.

The State University of New York, SUNY Oswego President, Nigeria’s Peter O. Nwosu returned to his native land with a high-level delegation under the SUNY Africa Initiative, advancing academic, cultural, and economic collaborations across three African nations.

State University of New York (SUNY) Oswego President Peter O. Nwosu traveled from the United States to Africa from July 11 to 23, helping lead a high-level delegation to his homeland of Nigeria, as well as Kenya and Rwanda, as part of the SUNY Africa Initiative — a system-wide effort to deepen strategic educational, economic and cultural partnerships across the continent.

SUNY Oswego President Peter O. Nwosu was honored with Lifetime Achievement Award in Academia and Leadership at the annual BOND Awards in Mississauga, Canada, on Friday, Sept. 12, 2025.

The City of Oswego recently announced that SUNY Oswego President Peter O. Nwosu will serve as the Grand Marshal for this year’s Independence Day Parade, taking place on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at 1 p.m.

Also establishes a School of Engineering and Natural Sciences in response to workforce trends

The renaming improves the university’s ability to attract grants, research funding, and partnerships with employers and community organizations — as well as fundraising opportunities to “promote initiatives that resonate with successful and engaged alumni.” It also “signals SUNY Oswego’s readiness to lead” in addressing regional and global challenges through innovative programming, it contends.

SUNY Oswego President Peter O. Nwosu joined fellow higher education leaders from across the nation in Washington, D.C. earlier this week to meet with members of the 119th Congress for the AASCU on the Hill Annual Convening.

In December 2024, Kenyan Ambassador to the United Nations, Erastus Ekitela Lokaale, visited SUNY Oswego to explore opportunities for developing educational and research connections between the university and Kenya.
