Members of the Laker family participated in the City of Fulton’s annual Memorial Day Parade on Saturday, continuing SUNY Oswego’s growing presence in community celebrations across Oswego County and Central New York.
Faculty, staff and students marched alongside veterans organizations, community groups and local leaders in recognition of Memorial Day and in honor of those who served in the United States Armed Forces. SUNY Oswego’s participation reflected the institution’s ongoing commitment to serving as Oswego County’s Hometown University.
The university’s expanded participation in regional events follows a successful series of appearances in local Fourth of July celebrations in 2025, including the City of Oswego parade, where Oswego President Peter O. Nwosu served as grand marshal.
Following the positive response from community members last year, the university opted to continue to increase its visibility and participation in local celebrations and traditions.
This year’s float was conceptualized and constructed through the collaborative efforts of multiple campus partners. Organizers offered special thanks to the Facilities Services and the Theatre Department for their support, particularly Sam Renner for assistance in designing and building the float featured in Saturday’s parade.
“It was an honor to participate in the parade and proudly represent SUNY Oswego in the community,” said Oliveah Stancliffe, a sophomore psychology major who marched in the parade. “Being part of such an important tradition was a really rewarding experience.”
“Our goal is for SUNY Oswego to continue showing up for the communities that support us year-round,” said Justin Dickerson, director of Student Orientation and Family Engagement. “Being the Hometown University means actively participating in local traditions and celebrations, and we’re excited to continue building those connections throughout the summer.”
SUNY Oswego will next participate in both the Fair Haven Fourth of July Parade and the City of Oswego Independence Parade later this summer. Faculty, staff and students interested in participating in future community parade appearances can express interest by contacting Justin Dickerson at Justin.Dickerson@oswego.edu.
