More than 100 students came together as Campus Recreation's Lee Hall gym hosted a daylong wheelchair basketball event, with six different teams enjoying spirited competition and community engagement on Sept. 29.
The event was designed to raise awareness about adaptive sports and the importance of inclusivity on campus. Inspired by student Logan Corteux, who uses a wheelchair, the program gave participants the opportunity to experience the game from a new perspective while celebrating the strength and skill involved in wheelchair basketball.
The six participating groups (Campus Recreation Student Staff, the ACHA Men's Club Hockey Team, Men's Club Basketball, Sigma Gamma Fraternity, Psi Phi Gamma Fraternity, and the Men's/Women's Intercollegiate Basketball Teams) competed in a games, drawing cheers and support from a crowd of students and campus community members.
Beyond the competition, the event highlighted the growing recognition of adaptive sports and the role they play in creating an inclusive campus environment thanks to CNY Adaptive Sports, who provided the wheelchairs and members from their organizations to help run the event
Campus Recreation and CNY Adaptive Sports hope to continue building on the momentum of this successful event, hosting future programs that promote accessibility, awareness and well-being for all students.
