The votes have been tallied, and the university’s new name for the student-allocated room previously known as The Space will be the Laker Lounge.

Situated in the basement below Swetman Gym at the Marano Campus Center, this newly named location has been eagerly anticipated by students over the past several months.

Laker Lounge underwent renovations based on student feedback, specifically to create more space on campus for gatherings while ensuring easy access to campus community resources in an informal environment. It now provides a relaxing and comfortable setting for students to engage with staff, faculty, groups, or organizations, whether socializing or partaking in academic pursuits.

Students can access Laker Lounge using their campus ID every day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. unless the location is reserved for an event.

“Before the semester, The Space was an area rarely known and used by students," said Aiden Wilson, the newly elected Student Association president for 2024-25. "However, by renaming the location ‘Laker Lounge,’ remodeling the layout and revamping its purpose, I believe that this secluded gem will generate more traction from students by encouraging collaborative and engaging interactions through club meetings, events, academic study sessions or personal downtime.”

Laker Lounge is accessible via the stairwell or elevator near the north end of the Swetman Gym in the Marano Campus Center or through the lower level outside entrance facing the lake. The renovation introduced new, vibrant seating, A/V connectivity, charging outlets, all-gender restrooms and fully supplied vending machines offering food and beverages.
