On Sunday, Nov. 5, more than 400 Laker student-athletes, coaches and administrators dedicated their time to raking the fall leaves off of over 50 yards for senior citizens in the Oswego community.

In its 18th year at SUNY Oswego, the event coincides with an annual statewide community service project by Student-Athlete Advisory Council chapters at many SUNY Athletic Conference institutions.

"It was a pleasure to watch the entire day unfold," said Merlin Joseph, assistant athletic director for student-athlete success and the project's 2023 organizer. "The weather was on our side, the student-athletes had a blast, and most importantly, we showed the community how much they mean to us. We do not ever take their support for granted."

Several community members were thrilled with the efforts the athletics department put forth to help with fall cleaning. Their praise about their experience interacting with SUNY Oswego Athletics included:

"My husband Bill and I would like to thank the members of the basketball team. We appreciate all of the teams involved in this project as the Men's Lacrosse team raked last year in the rain! We love this project! And appreciate you all! ... We also enjoy coming to watch your team play and we're looking forward to a great basketball season!" - Lisa and Bill Carney

"Thank you for the opportunity to meet and talk with so many outstanding SUNY Oswego students yesterday. The lacrosse team showed up Sunday afternoon with rakes in hand, an upbeat, friendly, courteous, respectful attitude and work ethic I wasn't sure existed anymore.  My yard looks wonderful! I am proud to be a SUNY Oswego Alumni." - James P. Finn and Grace A. Bruzek Finn, class of '73
