SUNY Oswego's Triandiflou Institute for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Transformative Practice proudly announced the appointment of Celinet Duran Jimenez as its newest Faculty Fellow.
Duran Jimenez, an assistant professor in the Criminal Justice Department at SUNY Oswego, brings a wealth of scholarly expertise and a deeply rooted commitment to social justice. As an immigrant and first-generation graduate, her personal journey informs her dedication to fostering a campus environment where every student feels seen, heard, and supported.
A scholar of justice and equity
Duran Jimenez earned her Ph.D. in criminal justice from the CUNY Graduate Center/John Jay College of Criminal Justice in 2023. Her research is at the forefront of critical societal issues, focusing on:
- Domestic terrorism and extremist violence.
- The intersections of race, ethnicity, and class within criminal justice policy.
- The impact of white supremacy and systemic oppression on underrepresented groups.
Currently, she serves as a co-principal investigator for the United States Extremist Crime Database, a project she has contributed to since 2008.
Transformative practice in action
In her role as Faculty Fellow, Duran Jimenez will work to enhance the SUNY Oswego community through several key initiatives:
Student research and mentorship: She will work directly with students, guiding them through research and the exploration of their own passions in equity work.
Community engagement: Building on her history of representing the university in high-profile dialogues, including interviews with Ta-Nehisi Coates and Yusef Salaam, she will continue to bring critical conversations to the forefront of campus life.
Inclusive excellence: Duran Jimenez will leverage her extensive experience as the Faculty Advisor for the Latino Student Union, Omega Phi Beta and the Criminal Justice Club, as well as her role as a Faculty Resident Mentor for the Be First Living Learning Community, to bridge the gap between academic theory and student lived experience.
"Dr. Duran Jimenez’s commitment to service and her tireless work in diversifying the curriculum make her an invaluable asset to the Triandiflou Institute," said Lillian Evans, director of the Triandiflou Institute. "We look forward to the transformative impact her fellowship will have on our students and the broader university community."
The Institute invites the campus to join them in congratulating Celinet Duran Jimenez on this appointment.
