In this season of thanks, the SUNY Oswego campus community takes pride in continuing its Cruisin' the Campus tradition of inviting families throughout the community to enjoy college recreational, educational and athletic facilities and events during the Thanksgiving break, Nov. 20 to 25.

"We are grateful to the greater Oswego community for the myriad ways it engages with and supports the college," said SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley. "Throughout the year, SUNY Oswego intentionally seeks to integrate and embed our arts, athletics, recreation and many other offerings in the community. This break in classes, in particular, is a perfect time to say, loud and clear, 'Thank you, Oswego,' and offer up our resources, facilities and programs to our neighbors.”

Tuesday through Sunday during Thanksgiving week, Cruisin' the Campus welcomes children and their parents to open skating at Marano Campus Center arena, planetarium presentations at Shineman Center, hikes at Rice Creek Field Station, multimedia materials at Penfield Library and its second-floor juvenile books area, Romney Field House's track and Lee Hall's pool, Oswego State Downtown's art exhibition and holiday shopping opportunities, and to women's and men's basketball at Laker Hall.

Children under age 17 need to be accompanied by a parent or adult. Most events offer free admission. Parking is free and no permit is required Nov. 20 to 25, though reserved, handicap and overnight restrictions still apply.

SUNY Oswego, for the first time this year, has built a comprehensive online calendar of all Cruisin' the Campus activities. A sampling:

  • The Shineman Center's planetarium features a virtual visit to the scientific instruments -- telescopes and detectors -- that look down on the Earth instead of up in "Observing Earth" with physics faculty member Scott Roby.
  • Men's basketball takes on Clarkson University, followed by the women's team vs. Hilbert College at Laker Hall -- both for one ticket, priced at $6 ($4 for youths). Tickets are available at ticket.oswego.edu, college box offices or by calling 315-312-3073.
  • Artist, storyteller and cultural anthropologist Mary Pierce displays her latest work in "Under the Moon," an exhibition at Oswego State Downtown, the college's store and gallery at the corner of West First and Bridge streets.
  • Opportunities to bring the whole family to run, hike, swim and play basketball in college facilities.

Cruisin' the Campus is one way in which SUNY Oswego faculty and staff engage and partner with local, national and international communities, and make an impact through research, community service and economic development for collective prosperity, equity, resilience and success. These efforts are in addition to the mutually beneficial partnerships between students and external partners in service learning, internships, cooperative education and community service initiatives.
