SUNY Oswego freshman Samia Montgomery has shown an ability to overcome much -- the death of her father, an illness for her mother, homelessness and hunger -- while continuing to excel, which made her one of five statewide recipients of the Carey Gabay Scholarship Program. Montgomery excelled as a student, placing second in her class and graduating Lansingburgh High School with a 95 average. She excelled outside the classroom, tutoring other students, earning induction into the National Honor Society and joining the school trivia team. Named for the late attorney and public servant Carey Gabay, the award recognizes a track record of overcoming obstacles in succeeding academically, service to others and a dedication to social justice. Four college representatives presented at AIGA’s “Access Now: Will You Be My Ally?” conference on SUNY Oswego’s Syracuse campus on Sept. 14. Rebecca Mushtare, an associate professor of art and a leader of Oswego’s Accessibility Fellows, and Kate Percival, accessibility analyst for the college, presented “Accessibility: The Good, The Bad and the Invisible,” with a broad overview of the current state of accessible design practices, helpful tools and ways to allow participants to practice fundamental accessibility principles. Joe Fitzsimmons and Pranay Chapagain of the Office of Communications and Marketing presented “Making a More Accessible Oswego.edu,” on how the college has made accessibility improvements to the main web template and dealing with the imperative of accessibility issues to make online content available to all audiences. 

Two student media organizations are up for awards at the CBI's National Electronic Student Media Convention, with winners announced in St. Louis on Saturday, Nov. 2. WTOP has three nominations as a finalist in the Best Live Sports Broadcast for both the 2018 Oswego-Plattsburgh Whiteout game and a men's basketball NCAA Tournament game vs. Baldwin Wallace, and in the Best Station Imaging category. Campus radio station WNYO is a finalist in the Best Sports Play-By-Play category for an Oswego-Plattsburgh men's hockey game.
