Michele Thornton of the MBA-health services administration faculty had a big spotlight at the National Association of Health Underwriters Capitol Conference in Washington D.C. on Feb. 25. Thornton ran a main stage 20-minute interview of Congresswoman Lauren Underwood, a freshman representative from Illinois, a former nurse and the youngest African-American woman to ever be elected to Congress. Thornton and Underwood discussed health-insurance reform issues in a main session of the large national conference.

Poongodi Geetha-Loganathan of the biological sciences faculty and research student Jessica Gibbons recently had the article “The Ultrastructure of Chrysemys Picta Eggshell and Shell Membrane” published in the peer-reviewed “American Journal of Zoology.”

The work of several SUNY Oswego students will appear in the Lakeside Statewide Juried Exhibition at the Art Association of Oswego. Student artists with accepted work include Natalie Archibee, Edward Arena, Sandra Derasmo, Cynthia Fox, Skylar Guest, Bradley Holen, Sophie Lucia Infarinato, Leighann McPartland and Meghan Scolo. The Art Association of Oswego galleries are housed in the Oswego Civic Arts Center, at the northern end of East Fourth Street in Oswego, directly across from historic Fort Ontario. Regular gallery hours are on 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays and 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays. The exhibition opens with a public reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 14, and runs weekends through April 12.

On Feb 17, professor and chair of physics Shashi Kanbur gave an invited seminar at Rochester Institute of Technology titled "Variable Star Astrophysics." Kanbur spent the day there in continuing efforts to develop a pipeline for interested Oswego students. He noted that two standout SUNY Oswego graduates, Daniel Wysocki (left) and Michael Kolacki, are already there working on their Ph.Ds.

Scott Maynard wins University Police award

University Police Officer Scott Maynard (center) was recognized at an awards banquet Feb. 15 at the Oswego Elks Lodge, receiving the Police Officer of the Year award for University Police. Starting as a police dispatcher for UP in 2014, he then became a police officer in 2016, Maynard has emerged as a leader among his colleagues, winning the "Traffic Safety Champion" award from the Oswego County Traffic Safety Board for the last two consecutive years. He has issued over 600 traffic citations and made 11 DWI arrests over the same period. “He is always willing to help anyone in need, and is helping to organize our educational program ‘Drive Safe, Live Safe’ which will be held April 29,” said Kevin Velzy (right), interim University Police chief.
