This Earth Week, SUNY Oswego grew its commitment to sustainability with the launch of the Tree Hall of Fame. This new program was created to celebrate and bring awareness to the exceptional trees that define the campus landscape.
In its inaugural year, the committee received several impressive nominations from the community. After careful review, three standout trees were selected for the 2026 induction:
- Northern Red Oak: Standing proud near the Lake Ontario shoreline.
- European White Birch: Located near the Marano Campus Center.
- Scots Pine: Within the Rice Creek Field Station.
Each inductee will be honored with a dedicated plaque featuring species details and a QR code. By scanning the code, visitors can dive into the Office of Sustainability ArcGIS Story Map to learn more about the tree’s history and see who submitted the nomination.
“We are thrilled to be sharing the unique stories behind these landmark trees,” said Maxon Ali, sustainability coordinator. “It’s more than just a map, it’s an opportunity for everyone to learn about our local ecosystem while celebrating the beauty of our campus.”
Future nomination are open as well. If you have a favorite campus tree, the Campus Environmental Action Committee wants to hear about it. Campus and community members are encouraged to help grow the Hall of Fame by submitting future nominations via this nomination form.
