In her one-woman show, “Makin’ Cake,” Dasha Kelly Hamilton slices into American history exploring race, culture and class with aha-moments and poignant vignettes, digital media and a supporting cast of two on-stage bakers.
Presented by ARTSwego and the I Am Oz Diversity Speaker Series, this free, ticketed event starts at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, in the Hewitt Hall ballroom. A free cake reception will immediately follow the performance, with cakes provided by JonJohn's Bakery.
As Wisconsin Poet Laureate and Milwaukee’s Artist of the Year in 2021, Hamilton describes herself as a “writer, performer, facilitator, mother, daughter, sister, builder, dreamer, phenomenon and change agent," aiming to provide an experience and conversation about equity in America in a refreshing and fun way.
Part history lesson, part social science revelation, “Makin’ Cake” is a short story about America's sweet tooth and pathway to salvation, initially commissioned by the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. After that initial success of Hamilton facilitating arts-based conversations on race and class throughout the community, she continues to develop Makin’ Cake and to pursue dialogues about human and social wellness.
Joining Hamilton on stage as guest bakers are SUNY Oswego's own Ladeycha Johnson, a senior theatre major and creative writing minor, and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Kendra Cadogan.
