Opening Oct. 21 in Tyler Art Gallery, "All That Remains" features artwork by SUNY Oswego art faculty members Peter Cardone and Christopher McEvoy. While each artist explores themes of slippage, memories and the push/pull of reality, their artworks engage these concepts in very different ways.

Cardone’s photographic series depicts the Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse, with scenes of the Great Lakes and Lake Ontario. The images of the lighthouse in Oswego Harbor, which is available for seasonal tours via the H. Lee White Maritime Museum, are devoid of people or living things. They feature in-transition interior spaces with views of the lake shown through another frame such as a door or a window. Other works look down on the water from a higher vantage point framing the view with bits of roof, gutter and railings.

“The photographs simultaneously generate feelings of presence and absence," Cardone explained. "Standing by the water, I feel grounded in a particular place and time. Yet, as I look out, I am untethered from the present, tracing the water’s path to memories of other lakes, oceans, places and people.”

McEvoy’s abstracted paintings inhabit the gap between perception and imagination. His large paintings are heavily layered with organic and geometric components. These forms overlap, fuse and create conflicting linear perspectives. This evokes a feeling of falling apart and coming together simultaneously.

“These aren't paintings about confusion but consciousness," McEvoy noted. "In fractured moments and invented landscapes, I witness my own daily negotiations with meaning — the constant work of assembling coherence from fragments.”

The exhibition will feature a pair of events on Tuesday, Oct. 28, in Tyler Art Gallery complementing the shows:

  • At 2:20 p.m.: a presentation will feature the H. Lee White Maritime Museum's curator Michael Pittavino and an artist talk by Peter Cardone
  • The 4:30 p.m. event will be a poetry reading and artist talk featuring McEvoy as well as faculty members Laura Donnelly, Stephanie Pritchard, Albert Abonada and JR Walsh

In addition, a closing reception will take place at 5 p.m. on the exhibition's last day, Friday, Nov. 14.
