SUNY Oswego’s College of Communication, Media and the Arts (CMA) invites students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to an Open House celebrating the newly renovated Hewitt Hall on Saturday, Oct. 25, from noon to 2:30 p.m.
The Open House, spanning both Hewitt and Tyler halls, will celebrate the completion of the SUNY Oswego arts corridor, following a combined renovation project of $127 million through the SUNY Construction Fund, and will bring the creative energy of the buildings to life with open studios, student demonstrations, live performances and a special activation in the White Box Gallery led by the current Artist-in-Residence.
Visitors will have the opportunity to engage directly with student creators, faculty members and staff who are shaping the college’s vibrant creative community.
Throughout the afternoon, guests can explore classrooms, labs and studios now alive with activity — each showcasing the diverse disciplines that make up CMA, from graphic design to studio art, theatre to music, communication to and broadcasting. The event encourages discovery, conversation and connection across campus and beyond.
Guests can enjoy sound and film demos, including a Sound for TV/Film project in the Audio Post Suite, student newscasts and weather updates in Broadcast Studio A, and alumni interviews in the Video Podcast Studio.
The WNYO DJ booth will spin classic and contemporary hits between Hewitt and Tyler Halls, while public relations and community journalism students share their in-progress work with nonprofit clients and local storytelling projects. The Cinema and Screen Studies Department will showcase student films in Hewitt 027.
The Theatre Department will showcase props, costumes and dramaturgy displays from “Silent Sky” in Tyler Hall, as well as hosting open rehearsals for “The Grown Ups” in Tyler 42. Music lovers can tour recording studios with students in session from noon to 1 p.m., followed by an Honors Recital in Tyler 11 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
The Department of Art and Design will feature interactive and participatory exhibits in both Hewitt and Tyler Halls, including student showcases in new media and digital design, alongside family-friendly artmaking stations and collaborative community projects. Visitors can also stop by Tyler Art Gallery to view “All That Remains,” a faculty exhibition featuring Peter Cardone and Christopher McEvoy, on view Oct. 21 to Nov. 14.
“We have always been chasing this idea of artistic convergence, and so now we have these beautiful buildings and spaces right across from one another in an arts corridor where our students, our faculty and our staff can come and go and work and play with one another,” said Jennifer Knapp, dean of the College of Communication, Media and the Arts.
Following years of renovation, Hewitt Hall has reopened as a central hub for creativity, learning, and innovation — and this event marks the first time the public will be able to experience the new space in full use.
All are welcome to attend the CMA Open House to take part in a milestone celebration of creative possibility on campus.
