The City of Oswego recently announced that SUNY Oswego President Peter O. Nwosu will serve as the Grand Marshal for this year’s Independence Day Parade, taking place on Sunday, July 6, at 1 p.m.
President Nwosu, who assumed leadership at SUNY Oswego in 2023, is widely respected for his dedication to student achievement, civic responsibility and institutional transformation. His collaborative spirit and deep investment in community engagement have made him a standout figure in both the academic and local spheres.
“We are honored to have Dr. Peter Nwosu serve as Grand Marshal for this year’s Independence Day Parade,” said Mayor Rob Corradino. “His visionary leadership at SUNY Oswego and commitment to community engagement exemplify the shared purpose of Oswego—where education and civic pride thrive side by side. I can think of no better person to lead this celebration of unity, patriotism and progress.”
The parade will kick off at Oswego High School at 1 p.m., proceeding along Bridge Street and concluding at historic Fort Ontario. The route offers excellent viewing spots for community members to enjoy a lineup of floats, marching bands, and local organizations — all coming together to celebrate Oswego’s patriotic spirit.
As Grand Marshal, President Nwosu will lead the procession, greeting numerous residents and visitors who gather annually to mark this festive tradition.
“Since SUNY Oswego is a hometown university with so many campus-community connections, I am very honored to serve as Grand Marshal of this amazing Oswego tradition,” President Nwosu said. “I look forward to seeing a wonderful turnout and celebrating with the community.”
Following the parade, the Independence Day Celebration continues with a Block Party from 2 to 10 p.m. in downtown Oswego. The event features free attractions for kids, live music, a special time capsule ceremony at 6:30 p.m., and a spectacular fireworks display over the Oswego River at 9:45 p.m.
