Andrea Vickery, assistant professor of communication studies at SUNY Oswego, has joined the associate editor team at the International Journal of Listening.
Vickery has been a member of the editorial board since 2021 As a board member, she reviewed manuscripts, but the new role brings expanded involvement.
“I have responsibility for seeing manuscripts through the publication process. It is a much more active process,” Vickery said. “Rather than reviewing, I'm helping recruit reviewers, track and monitor the review process, following up with reviewers, and working with our editor-in-chief Dr. (Elizabeth) Parks to render decisions and communicate this information to the authors.”
The publication is international in scope, increasing the prestige that such a role carries.
“I am currently the only associate editor from an institution in New York state,” Vickery said. “I've worked alongside listening leaders from countries including Germany, Finland and Japan, along with colleagues from national institutions in California, Colorado, Connecticut.”
With one of the university’s strategic plan drivers being Connect, Vickery noted, “my service provides SUNY Oswego with yet another important point of regional, national, and global connection.”
The International Journal of Listening, a Taylor & Francis publication, publishes original research from a variety of disciplines investigating listening in contexts such as professional, interpersonal, public/political, mass media, educational, intercultural and international listening. The journal is supported by the International Listening Association.
“Having one of our faculty not just leading the conversation on listening in the classroom but in shepherding cutting-edge research on listening through the publication process strengthens the reputation of our department and the quality of instruction for our students,” Vickery said. “It would be impossible for me to imagine having been awarded the President's Award for Teaching Excellence a few years ago if I didn't study listening and make listening a priority in my relationships with students at Oswego.”
Vickery studied business administration at Chapman University and obtained her master’s degree and doctorate in communication studies at Louisiana State University. Vickery currently teaches classes such as “Interpersonal Communication,” “Communication Research Methods” and “Communication Service Learning” at SUNY Oswego.
