Counseling Services and Rice Creek Field Station collaborated this semester to support students’ mental health using the powerful effects of the natural world.

Commencement 2020 takes place on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2020. Five separate virtual ceremonies will begin concurrently at 10 a.m. to honor undergraduates who will earn their baccalaureate degrees from the School of Business; School of Communication, Media and the Arts; School of Education; or the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; as well as a separate ceremony for students earning their graduate certificates, master’s degrees and certificates of advanced study.

Graduate Studies Week, Nov. 9 to 12, will feature several virtual panel discussions featuring national speakers and local leaders on topics ranging from social media and disinformation to disruption in schools caused by COVID-19.

Penfield Library began hiring and training students as Peer Reference Assistants at the Research Help Desk, beginning in September 2019. The PRAs provide a welcoming and knowledgeable student face to the often complex process of conducting library research.

A federal grant of nearly $280,000 over the course of three years will strengthen the college’s mental health crisis counseling capabilities.

Writer, musician and scholar Leanne Betasamosake Simpson will present “Freedom Sings: Indigenous Land, Bodies and Resurgence” in a keynote speech and workshop Thursday, Oct. 29, for the college Institute for Global Engagement’s Year of First Nations.

SUNY Oswego was an early adopter of the Thriving Campus application, a program that connects students with counseling services and which SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras recently announced would be adopted throughout the State University system as part of a comprehensive plan to expand access to mental health services to every student at SUNY’s 64 campuses.

The 2020 edition of the Lewis B. O’Donnell Media Summit will convene an all-star group to discuss “On the Front Lines with the First Amendment” on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Alumni achievers will tell their stories, provide advice and add to the networks of current students via a series of presentations coordinated by the Office of Career Services and the Oswego Alumni Association.
