The Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Oswego County is thrilled to announce the award of a $30,000 grant spread over three years from United Way of Greater Oswego County. These funds will contribute to RSVP’s ongoing work of engaging seniors aged 55 and up in volunteer service that meets critical needs in Oswego County.

The grant will support recruitment, volunteer tracking and retention, as well as marketing efforts, allowing RSVP to benefit more Oswego County residents over the next three years.

RSVP of Oswego County, which has been sponsored by SUNY Oswego since it started in 1973, is among the longest-running volunteer programs in the county. RSVP of Oswego County has approximately 250 volunteers who provide social support at 39 community volunteer stations in areas such as environmental stewardship, tax preparation and counseling, adult literacy assistance, and assistance at many local food pantries and kitchens.

In August 2024, Kathryn Watson was hired by SUNY Oswego to direct the program as part of her role of director of workforce innovation and community impact. Watson brings a background in education and nonprofit leadership to the position and will work with program staff and volunteers to continue to provide exemplary service to Oswego County.

“United Way of Oswego Greater County has a long history of supporting organizations that contribute to the good of our community, and RSVP of Oswego County is honored to have its support,” noted Watson. “These funds will deepen the program’s impact, allowing us to reach more senior volunteers and more partnering volunteer stations.”

United Way of Oswego County Executive Director Patrick Dewine added, “Our volunteer-based Allocations Committee Members realize the value RSVP members provide to so many non-profit programs across Oswego County. Their time, talents, and experience have proven to offer vital services to many organizations, so investing United Way donor dollars in this program is a fiscally responsible commitment that continues to make a broad impact in our community.”

In addition to funding from United Way of Greater Oswego County, RSVP of Oswego County receives funding from AmeriCorps Seniors ($225,000 over three years) and New York State Office of the Aging. RSVP of Oswego County recently hosted its annual volunteer recognition luncheon, attended by 140 volunteers, community members and elected officials.
