Retiring Chief Technology Officer Sean Moriarty

After over a decade of exceptional service, Chief Technology Officer Sean Moriarty has announced his retirement from SUNY Oswego, effective Sept. 12. The campus and community are invited to a retirement celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, in 114 Marano Campus Center, with remarks at 3 p.m.

Moriarty joined the university’s Campus Technology Services (CTS) department in April 2013, following a distinguished 27-year career in information technology at the University of Windsor in Canada.

Since joining the university, he has been a driving force behind major technological advancements. Moriarty has led numerous initiatives that have modernized the campus and significantly improved services for students, faculty and staff.

Some of these initiatives include: building a solid technology infrastructure and expanding campus Wi-Fi coverage, providing a strong and coordinated response to technology needs during the pandemic, co-leading campus efforts on digital accessibility that have been recognized SUNY-wide and nationally and most recently supporting Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiatives.

Moriarty has facilitated some other technological advancements through the offering of Technology Innovation Program grants, the support of multiple campus Innovative Instruction Technology Grants, and the support of digital accessibility and generative AI faculty fellowships.

His leadership has been guided by his and the department’s values of being client-centered, collaborative, cooperative, communicative and results-driven. Some of his proudest accomplishments include enhancing CTS's role in technology implementation and improving the team's technical expertise and collaboration.

Beyond SUNY Oswego, his leadership has impacted SUNY and national organizations, including EDUCAUSE. From 2018 to 2020, Moriarty served as chair of the SUNY Council of Chief Information Officers (CIO), demonstrating his standing as a thought leader in higher education technology. In 2020, he received the SUNY Council of CIOs Collaboration Award. He has also served as a mentor to many individuals attending the SUNY Strategic, Academic, and Innovative Leadership CIO Leadership Academy, a semester-long program for IT individuals aspiring to leadership roles.

Nationally, Moriarty has served on the EDUCAUSE Enterprise IT Program Advisory Committee, where he wrote and published several articles. He has spoken at many SUNY and national conferences, including EDUCAUSE and Route to Market Higher Education conferences. He has been invited to speak on various podcasts.

Moriarty’s commitment to excellence has left a lasting impact on SUNY Oswego's technological landscape. His SUNY Chancellor’s award for Excellence in Professional Service, earned in 2022, solidifies his deep commitment to offering reliable, robust, and secure technologies throughout all areas of the campus.

He has been an invaluable asset to the university and the SUNY system. His expertise and dedication will be greatly missed. Please join the campus in extending deep gratitude to Moriarty for his many contributions and wishing him all the best in his well-deserved retirement.
