Two Oswego students, one Oswego professor and the university archivist librarian were recently inducted into the SUNY Oswego chapter of Delta Phi Alpha, the National German Honor Society. Samantha Werner, Benjamin Howard-Green, Professor Andrea Vickery, and University Archivist Zachary Vickery were honored for their outstanding academic achievement in German as well as for their participation in cultural events focusing on the German-speaking countries.
Werner, from Warsaw in Western New York, combines a double major in accounting and in global and international studies with a minor in German. She began her study of German at Oswego and then participated in the Oswego Kempten Summer Program last year. She hopes to travel the world, live in Europe, and work as an accountant.
Hailing from Baldwinsville, Howard-Green will graduate this semester with a degree in computer science, along with minors in mathematics and logic. He began German at Oswego to try a different language with a different vocabulary and grammar. He intends to earn money in the short term and eventually travel or live in Germany.
Professor Andrea Vickery chose German during her undergraduate study at Chapman University, where she minored in Germanic studies and studied abroad in Salzburg, Austria. An associate professor of communication studies at Oswego, Vickery teaches undergraduate and graduate courses, and advises Lambda Pi Eta (the National Communication Association Honor Society).
Originally from New Hampshire, University Archivist Librarian Zachary Vickery began German in college due to personal interest in the language and culture. He spent a “life-changing” semester in Salzburg, learning about the music, literature, philosophy, history, food and sports of Germanic-speaking countries. At Oswego, he liaises with various academic departments and oversees the preservation and access to important historical materials.
Faculty members Patrick Schultz and Ana Djukic-Cocks of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures welcomed the new members and thanked them for their dedication to German and its attendant cultures.
