SUNY Oswego communication studies faculty member Katherine S Thweatt recently earned the Distinguished Service Award from the Eastern Communication Association (ECA), which honors members for contributions to the field of communication in general and to ECA in particular.

Thweatt earned this honor during ECA's 2024 annual conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts, last week.

She began her service to ECA in 1996 when she assisted one of her mentors in planning the annual 1997 conference. Thweatt has served ECA in many ways by serving as an interest group chair, sponsorship director, representative to the National Communication Association, interest group secretary, submission reviewer and conference advisor.

In 2016, Thweatt was elected vice president-elect to plan the 2019 conference in Providence, Rhode Island. She served as president for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a past officer, she has continued to serve by returning to the role of director of sponsorships for the 2023 conference and will serve again in this role for the 2025 conference in Buffalo. She served as the first-ever conference advisor for the 2024 conference.

Her service to the field is also noted as she serves the National Communication Association and as a reviewer for numerous journals.
