The Redbud Summer Institute, based on the SUNY Oswego campus, is now accepting applications for its summer 2026 program in environmental ethics.
Led by two of Oswego's professors of philosophy, this is an opportunity for young people to explore deep questions about their relationship to the natural environment and what they can do to improve it. The five-day program includes outdoor seminar-style discussions, nature walks, guest speakers and a field trip to Silver Tree Forest Farm in Owasco to learn about sustainable and regenerative agriculture.
“With all of the problems in the world these days, it’s easy to feel powerless and adrift. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. Our goal with Redbud is to give young people a space to slow down, find community and ask hard questions about what we can be doing together to build a better planet,” says Mike Gadomski, assistant professor of philosophy at SUNY Oswego and one of the program’s organizers. “The beautiful environment here in Oswego and the surrounding region is a perfect place to ground these conversations.”
The program runs from June 30 to July 2 and July 6 and 7, with a break for the holiday weekend in the middle. It is designed for anyone aged 17 to 20, though all applications will be considered.
There is a $100 registration fee, with aid available for those who need it. Lunch and snacks will be provided each day. Participants will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the program.
Those interested should apply via this link by May 15. Late applications will be considered. Find more information on this website and/or by emailing redbudsummerinstitute@proton.me.
The Redbud Summer Institute is supported by the American Philosophical Association and the Department of Philosophy at SUNY Oswego.
