Student Job Scam for Check Fraud Resurfacing

""Some SUNY Oswego students are receiving an email containing a vaguely described job offer, from either ‘Morgan Keontrey’ or ‘Theresa Murray’.  This email is a scam.  It appears to be a check fraud/wire transfer scam, where fraudulent checks are sent via courier or mail to the victims.  We’ve taken steps to prevent any future communication with this scammer but felt it prudent to warn the greater campus community and provide guidance to potential victims.

If you provided any personal information to the scammer, cease all contact with the sender.  Do not respond to any calls, texts or emails related to this scam, or answer any calls or texts from unknown numbers.  If you receive a check in the mail from the scammer, do not cash it. We know the scammer requested phone numbers and personal email addresses, but we do not know if anyone sent other kinds of sensitive information, like bank accounts or passwords.  If you disclosed anything beyond a phone number or email address, we highly encourage you to reach out to the Help Desk (315-312-3456 or help@oswego.edu) for specific advice based on the kind of information that was sent.

If and when you receive these emails, you can safely ignore and delete them.  It also is beneficial to report them as phishing emails within Gmail, or if that option is not visible, report them as spam.  You may also forward them to help@oswego.edu so that Campus Technology Services can stay abreast of the email threats reaching our community.
