Children ages 7 to 14 will have some options for hands-on technology lessons through STEAM Quest and STEM summer camps sponsored or co-sponsored by SUNY Oswego’s Division of Extended Learning.

The college partners with the New York State Teachers Center and CiTi BOCES for a series of weeklong STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) Quest camps. The camps cost $100 per week and run Monday through Thursday mornings for the following dates and locations:

* Fitzhugh Park Elementary in Oswego: July 8 to 11 and July 15 to 18

* Central Square Middle School: July 8 to 11

* East Syracuse Elementary School: July 15 to 18

* Pulaski Middle School: July 22 to 25

* East Syracuse-Minoa’s Woodland Elementary: July 22 to 25

* St. Margaret's in Mattydale: July 29 to Aug. 1

* Solvay Elementary: July 29 to Aug. 1

* Solvay High School: Aug. 5 to 8

These camps run from 8:30 a.m. to noon, except for the two weeks at Fitzhugh Park Elementary, which are 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

The STEAM Quest program serves as a learning experience for the teachers as well as students. Teachers spend the month of June learning new technology and then, in July and August, practice the lesson plans with the campers. Organizers said each classroom usually has several teachers so the students get plenty of individualized attention. CiTi and the teacher center provide the camps with the latest technology.

The sessions will include such technologies as Lego WeDo, iPads, Chromebooks, virtual reality, circuitry, green screening, 3D printers and more.

The STEM workshops on SUNY Oswego’s lakeside campus aim to inspire the inner scientists in children. Camps run Aug. 5 to 8 and Aug. 12 to 15, and attendees can choose programs in the morning, afternoon or both for options like coding, robotics and stop-motion animation. Cost is $139 per four-day session ($278 for morning and afternoon sessions for a particular week).

Options for mornings (9 a.m. to noon) Aug. 5 to 8 are “Coding And Robotics” or “MeeperBOTS and CS First Coding.” Afternoon options (1 to 4 p.m.) that week are “LEGO Robotics WeDo Original Ozobot” or “CS First Coding.”

For Aug. 12 to 15, morning options include “LEGO Robotics WeDo Original” or “Ozobot and CS First Coding.” Afternoon options are “Stop Motion Animation and Green Screening” or “STEM Sampler.”
