Planetarium's April shows to probe Mars' closest approach to Earth

The SUNY Oswego planetarium will examine "Mars: The Opposition of 2018" at 7 p.m. every Sunday during March.

The show will explore the upcoming perihelic opposition of Mars -- when it comes closest to the Earth -- which will occur on July 27. Every 16 years, Mars comes particularly close and becomes very bright in the sky, offering excellent views even through relatively small telescopes. Attendees can learn about plans for viewing Mars this summer in Oswego. A telescope viewing will follow the show, weather permitting.

Sunday shows will continue through June with changing topics each month in the state-of-the-art facility on the second floor of the Richard S. Shineman Center for Science, Engineering and Innovation.

The planetarium has limited seating, so guests are encouraged to arrive a bit early. Shows are recommended for children ages 4 and older. Children under 17 must be accompanied by an adult. No food or drink is permitted in the facility.

Parking is free in the commuter lot off Washington Boulevard and the employee lot off Centennial Boulevard across from Shineman Center.
