SUNY Oswego's annual Honors Convocation will celebrate student academic achievement at 3 p.m. Friday, April 7, in the Marano Campus Center arena and convocation hall, with a keynote by 1977 graduate Dr. Raelynn Cooter, associate provost for academic infrastructure at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.

Honors Convocation will recognize the achievements of around 115 students throughout the disciplines. Sponsored by Vega, SUNY Oswego student women's honor society, the event takes place during Oswego's Honors Week highlighting the outstanding accomplishments of students and faculty.

Awards from academic departments, the Oswego Alumni Association, Oswego College Foundation and Division of Extended Learning, as well as the Chancellor's Awards for Student Excellence, will mark this celebration of academic success.

Members of the campus community, family members and friends are invited to attend the admission-free event, which also includes free parking.

Alumna achiever

After graduating from Oswego with a sociology degree, Cooter earned a master's in human services administration from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1984 and a Ph.D. in higher education administration in 1994. She has worked in higher education for over 35 years.

In addition to her other responsibilities, she is TJU's accreditation liaison officer to Middle States Association and has served as a site reviewer at other colleges and universities.

Cooter has also been an involved alumna at her alma mater. She currently serves on the Oswego Alumni Association Board of Directors and the Sheldon Legacy Society Steering Committee, and she is a member of a general scholarship selection committee. She has established her own scholarship in memory of her parents to give back and recognize SUNY Oswego for the outstanding education she received at the lakeside college.

In addition to her volunteer service to her alma mater, Cooter's personal interests include reading, traveling and ongoing efforts to master the French language.
