Enactus members donate winter outerwear to children

SUNY Oswego’s chapter of Enactus, a student-run organization in the School of Business committed to using entrepreneurial action to enable human progress, recently bought coats, hats and gloves for 22 local children in need.

Teachers at Oswego’s Leighton Elementary School helped identify recipients, said senior accounting major Jordan Shutts, past president of the college’s Enactus chapter.

“We then used money raised from last year’s Oswego Cares event to purchase the clothing. JC Penney in Oswego offered us an exceptional discount, which allowed us to purchase roughly $3,000 in clothing for $922,” Shutts said.

Enactus’ contribution stemmed from the December 2015 Oswego Cares fundraising event co-hosted with Premier Living Suites and Zink Screenprinting and Design, he said.

“Zink’s owner, Glenn Zansitis, was inspired to start the event because children should never worry about staying warm,” Shutts said. “Last year’s event brought in $950 thanks to our generous donors.”

Formerly named Students in Free Enterprise, Enactus—which has about 40 members at SUNY Oswego—applies business concepts “to develop community outreach projects, transform lives and shape a better, more sustainable world,” the organization said. The organization is active at 1,600 colleges and universities in 37 countries.
