Cruisin' the Campus invites community to range of events

As area school districts approach spring break, SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley welcomes the greater Oswego community to enjoy opportunities for recreation, education and events in theater, art and athletics during the family-friendly Cruisin' the Campus, April 14 to 23.

Nearly all of the activities are free, though children 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Parking on campus is free for Cruisin' the Campus, but drivers need to observe handicap, reserved and overnight restrictions.

The theater department's spring play "Pride & Prejudice" will premiere on the Waterman Theatre stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 21. The play's run will include a performance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 22. The production, based on the Jon Jory adaptation of Jane Austen's classic book, offers a preview on April 20. On the cinematic side, the college's department of modern languages and literatures will screen "In July" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, as part of a series of German films with English subtitles. Admission is free.

Candidates for bachelor of fine arts degrees will show their best work in painting, graphic design, illustration, drawing, digital media, ceramics and printmaking in the first of two free BFA Exhibitions from noon to 5 p.m. Friday, April 14, and 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 15, in Tyler Art Gallery.

Oswego State Downtown's exhibition, "Going for Adventure: Illustrations by Rachel Ikins," will be on display for free from noon to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 14 and 15, and Wednesday through Saturday, April 19 to 22. Visitors can also shop at this college store and gallery on the corner of West First and Bridge streets in Oswego.

Laker teams in baseball, softball and men's and women's lacrosse will compete, weather permitting, all free of charge. Visit oswegolakers.com to stay up to speed on rainouts. Clarkson is scheduled to visit Oswego's nationally ranked baseball team at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, at Laker Baseball Field. In softball, Oswego will host Hamilton, Oneonta and New Paltz at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 18; 3 p.m. Friday, April 21; and noon Saturday, April 22, respectively, all at Laker Softball Field.

In lacrosse, the men's team will face off at Laker Turf Stadium against Oneonta at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 15, and against Canton at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 19. The women will host Fredonia at 4 p.m. Friday, April 14, at the same venue.

Camps for basketball players ages 7 to 18 and soccer players 4 to 17 will take place during spring break, Monday, April 17, through Thursday, April 20. Spots are limited. Recreation galore

The trails at Rice Creek are open during daylight hours throughout spring break. The field station will open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, April 15 and 22. A naturalist-guided Rice Creek Ramble will take place from 11 a.m. to noon April 22.

Lee Hall Gymnasium will open from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 15, and Thursday, April 20 to Sunday, April 23. Attendees are asked to bring dry sneakers. The gym will open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, April 17 to 19.

The swimming pool at Lee Hall will open from noon to 2 p.m. April 15 and April 22 and 23. The pool will open 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 17 through April 21.

Runners and walkers may use the outdoor track at Romney Field House before 9 a.m., from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and after 7 p.m. April 14 and April 17 to 21.

The College Store in Marano Campus Center will open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, April 17, to Friday, April 21. Hours on Saturday, April 22, are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Educational activities

Alumna Betsy McTiernan and Rice Creek Associates will present "We Are Lake Ontario" from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at Rice Creek Field Station. The afternoon will include children's activities and light snacks.

The planetarium in the Richard S. Shineman Center for Science, Engineering and Innovation will present "The Weird Lives of Close Binary Stars" at 3 p.m. Friday, April 14, and Wednesday, April 19. "The Eclipse Is Coming" will screen on the planetarium's dome at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 16 and 23. Admission is free, but seating is limited so arrive a bit early.

Penfield Library's Maker Services and SUNY Oswego's Makers Club will host "Crafts, Circuits and Fun!" from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 18. The event is free. The library's hours through Cruisin' the Campus are noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 15; 2 to 11 p.m. Sunday, April 16; 7:45 a.m. to 11 p.m. April 17 to 20; 7:45 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, April 21; and 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 22.
