One of the region's longest-running summer enrichment programs, the Sheldon Institute for Barbara Shineman Scholars at SUNY Oswego will return for its 41st year from July 22 to Aug. 2.

The institute offers a selection of educational and fun courses for students entering grades 2 through 10. It is known for small class sizes, projects chosen to engage young learners and dynamic teachers whom students return to see summer after summer.

Attendees are assigned to one of four divisions: novice, for students entering grades 2 and 3; intermediate, for those entering grades 4 and 5; junior, for those starting grades 6 and 7; and senior, for incoming 8th, 9th and 10th graders.

During its two weeks, the institute runs weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. with a midday break for lunch.

Thanks in part to generous gifts from the Shineman Foundation and Tarandi Foundation, the registration cost remains $330.

A 10 percent discount is available for children whose families meet one of the following: 1) registering more than one child, 2) having a parent who works at SUNY Oswego, or 3) serving as an instructor this year at the institute.

Financial assistance will be expanded for families whose children qualify for free or reduced lunch at school. To apply for financial assistance, contact Candy Rasbeck at candace.rasbeck@oswego.edu or 315-312-2103 before registering.

Last year, the popular summer program was renamed the Sheldon Institute for Barbara Shineman Scholars after a $1 million gift from the Richard S. Shineman Foundation allowed the institute to plan for enhancements.

SUNY Oswego professor emerita and alumna Dr. Barbara Palmer Shineman helped establish the Sheldon Institute, personally developed its curriculum for young students and prepared teachers who led the institute's programming each year. The gift to the Oswego College Foundation came from the foundation that she established in her late husband's memory.
