For health and safety reasons that involved reducing density in number of students moving in at any one time, this year’s move-in for first-year students extended from the usual one day into three days, Aug. 14 to 16.

Returning student Annika Wickham, a sophomore journalism major, moves into Seneca Hall on Aug. 21, part of four days of move-in for returning students, Aug. 20 to 23.

Student Association President Lizeth Ortega presented a compelling message as part of the Virtual Welcoming Torchlight Ceremony, which took place online on Friday, Aug. 21.

Anthony Pompa, a chemistry graduate student and teaching assistant for CHE113L, studies his textbooks during the first day of classes, Aug. 24, in the biochemistry teaching lab, 112 Shineman Center.

Tricia Vivlamore, a nurse practitioner with the college's Health Services, processes saliva swab samples Aug. 12 for COVID-19 in a procedure called "pooling" in Hewitt ballroom. Individual students each had samples taken upon arrival to campus. Regular and repeated surveillance testing of the campus community began this week. The BFA exhibition for bachelor of fine arts spring 2020 graduates appears as posters of student art lining the windows of Tyler Hall. Since the pandemic prevented a regular exhibition, the art department and Tyler Art Gallery came up with an alternate method to still celebrate students’ outstanding work.

Co-organized by students Samisha Elysee (pictured in Tyler Hall) and Tiffany Flores, the Aug. 20 “Tour of Black Excellence” was among the highlights of Welcome Week. Structured like a campus scavenger hunt, the student-led program connected new students to both past and present contributions that the Black community has made to Oswego and the surrounding area.

Inside and outside of Tyler Hall, the theme for the Tour of Black Excellence involved contributions of Black artists and musicians. Central New York artist Jaleel Campbell brought this to life on site with a collection of his digital illustrations and variety of cloth dolls.

Stops on the Tour of Black Excellence included The Space in Marano Campus Center, which focused on appropriation of Black culture and contributions by other communities. From left in front are station host Theodore Cup, a senior biochemistry major; Asia Dennis, a freshman wellness management major; and Aniyah Dukes-Snead, a freshman accounting major. “Behind the Mask: Portraiture from the Permanent Collection,” which runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays through Sept. 26 in Tyler Art Gallery, portrays a variety of faces in works from the college’s art collection ranging from the 17th to 21st century. Looking at a ceramic sculpture titled "Holding Tight, Letting Go," which is a 2011 Presidential Purchase Award by artist and 2013 SUNY Oswego graduate Caroline Hayward, are Ellen Weber (left), a junior graphic design major and art gallery attendant, and Megan Campbell, a senior theatre major. For those unable to make it to Tyler Hall, the exhibition is available for view via an online gallery.
