As a packed house in Marano Campus Center auditorium listens -- and an audience on the livestreamed coverage of the event watches -- PricewaterhouseCoopers International Limited Chairman Robert E. Moritz, class of 1985 and now a member of the Oswego College Foundation, speaks Oct. 12 on "Global Trends and Building Skills for the Future." Moritz shared stories and highlights of his career as well as outlined megatrends unfolding now and moving global economies into the future.

Peter Bocko (foreground), class of 1975, retired chief technology officer of Corning Glass Technologies, meets Oct. 6 with chemistry faculty and the student scholars Bocko and his wife, Andrea Guglielmo Bocko '73 M '75, sponsored through an endowment they established to support faculty-mentored summer research for undergraduate chemistry students. Bocko, a Commencement speaker for his alma mater in May 2014, spent his career innovating and leading development for Corning Technologies of such innovations as liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and Gorilla Glass. 

Appearing as part of the Institute for Global Engagement's Year of India series of events, Sumi Somaskanda, a reporter with international German broadcasting company Deutsche Welle, speaks Oct. 13 in Penfield Library's Speakers Corner on "Indian Media in a Time of Rising Nationalism." Somaskanda has worked as a correspondent in the field, a writer, producer and anchor, and also has reported on Germany and Europe for such outlets as Foreign Policy, Al Jazeera, Washington Post, Newsweek, USA Today and the Global Post. She appeared later that day in Marano Campus Center auditorium in an interview format with Michael Riecke of communication studies, and then met with students in the library's Lake Effect Cafe.

Jasmine Hundal (left) and Sushmita Banerjee dress Oct. 14 for an observance of Diwali -- the festival of lights celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains -- in the first-floor lounge of Hart Hall Global Living and Learning Center. This year's Oswego Reading Initiative author, Lindy West, speaks Oct. 11 at the Living Writers Series in Marano Campus Center auditorium. She spoke to student writers and others about how her career has developed from humble beginnings to the publishing of her bestselling memoir, "Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman," and a column in the New York Times. She later delivered the 2017 ORI talk about "Shrill," which visits issues of gender inequality, body shaming and Internet harassment, but also striving to inject humor. Against a background of personal experience, the book deals with how to survive and stay positive in a world where equality is given to a select number based on gender and body image.

Psychology faculty member Victor Licatese speaks Oct. 8 at Leadership Rocks, an annual conference for officers of Hall Councils governing each residence hall as well as leaders of the Residence Hall Association, the overall governing board for the college's 13 on-campus living options. The RHA's executive board presents the conference to help train and develop council officers. Visual artist Monica Haller talks Oct. 13 about "Veteran's Book Project: Objects for Deployment," an interactive exhibition running through Sunday in Tyler Art Gallery. The project features a library of 50 books, each authored by a person with firsthand experience of war: a veteran of the American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, a veteran of the Vietnam War, or an Iraqi or Afghan civilian displaced by war. SUNY Oswego in Syracuse hosts a reception and lecture Oct. 12 by visiting artist Zhinan Jiang (center), an internationally renowned watercolorist from Tsinghua University's prestigious Academy of Art & Design. Jiang’s talk, "Chinese Watercolor Now," introduced the Syracuse community to his own work and examples from important movements in Chinese painting over the past 100 years. His recent paintings were displayed during the reception; these were exhibited in Tyler Hall's Tyler Art Gallery in September while he was a visiting scholar. (Submitted by Lisa Langlois)

Students from chemistry and biochemistry took a trip Sept. 21 to Bausch & Lomb in Rochester. MacKenzie Grow (left), a gender and women's studies major, collects data at the Oswego County Department of Social Services in Mexico as part of her countywide community outreach study on reproductive healthcare issues for women in Oswego. For her honors thesis this semester, Grow's study seeks to explain the high rate of unplanned pregnancies in Oswego County. She travels around the county to distribute information and care packages to community members and to ask them to fill out short surveys. 

SUNY Oswego student dramaturgs Henry Liebentritt (left) and Caitlin Weinell (right) flank stage manager Cadi Hannold on the under-construction set of the theatre department's "Clybourne Park," a comedy-drama opening Thursday night that satirizes attitudes toward race and gentrification in the late '50s and today. The trio spoke Oct. 10 about the importance of research to assist the actors and the other crew in properly interpreting a script whose first act is set nearly 60 years ago. The Bruce Norris play, directed by Henry Shikongo of the theatre faculty, also runs this Friday and Saturday, as well as the following Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 26 to 28. The Oswego State women's soccer team (pictured facing Fredonia at home on Oct. 7) upset 8th-ranked Geneseo, 1-0, on the road on Saturday, handing the Knights their first loss of the season. Oswego State's Colin Greenseich finishes fourth among more than 200 runners at the University of Rochester's Yellowjacket Invitational cross country meet on Oct. 14, leading the Laker men's team to a fifth-place finish among 17 teams.
