Many students participated in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Feb. 7, honoring King’s commitment to direct action and community support. The annual event is hosted by Experiential Learning, Student Engagement and Leadership, and The Institute for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Transformative Practice. Projects included students packing hygiene kits for homeless community members, shown by the project’s student organizers in 141 Marano Campus Center.

The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, with the theme "Moving the Dream Forward: Music Through the Movement," took place on Feb. 6 in Sheldon Hall, featuring readings and performances blending academic insight with cultural performances. James Dekle provided the keynote speech and a musical performance. Dekle has over 20 years of professional experience in music and currently serves as Artist-in-Residence, music director at the Purdue University Black Cultural Center. In this role, Dekle serves as the choral director for the Black Voices of Inspiration Choir and is the founding director of the Purdue Express, a performance-based recruitment ensemble.
The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration featured readings and performances, including gospel music from The Praise Team from Peoples AME Zion Church from Syracuse.
The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration included a classic jazz piece by John Coltrane titled “Mr. P.C.,” performed by Eric Schmitz, professor of music (on drums), with Aaron Wrafter (alto sax), Trey Woolwine (trumpet), Charlie Cherchio (trombone), Mya Roper (bass) and Joe Salazar (guitar).
Performances during the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration included the Del Sarte Dance Club choreographed to "Tightrope" by Janelle Monáe, a song that echoes the need to maintain balance, ambition and integrity regardless of the “highs and lows” of life.
The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration featured Michael Nedrick, a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, discussing the importance and legacy of the event. The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated founded the first Annual MLK Celebration at SUNY Oswego in 1989.
Rice Creek Field Station's annual Celebrate Snow Winter Festival on Saturday, Feb. 14, provided free activities for visitors of all ages. Activities included catching and examining snowflakes with the Meteorology Club, cross-country skiing, roasting marshmallows over a campfire, maple tree tapping with the Sustainability Office, science demonstrations and much more. SUNY Oswego University Police Officer Scott Maynard (left) earned SUNY’s Professional Service Award, an honor that recognizes members for acts that greatly enhance the operation of their respective University Police departments. Maynard was among the recipients of the 2025 University Police Awards, the highest recognition by the SUNY Police Chiefs Association, SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. announced in December. The annual awards honor investigators, lieutenants, officers, staff and students for their devotion, bravery and unwavering commitment to campus safety.
