SUNY Oswego will host “Land, Sky, Water: Watercolor, Acrylic and Pastel,”  an exhibition by artist Joan Applebaum opening Friday, Nov. 4, at Oswego State Downtown as part of SUNY Oswego’s Downtown Artists Series.

The exhibition, which focuses on the multi-medium Upstate New York landscapes of an artist who has displayed her work throughout the state, will run through Jan. 20 at the branch of Tyler Art Gallery and the College Store at West First and Bridge streets.

A reception will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 4, featuring a talk by Applebaum. Poet Milo Licata, a senior creative writing and philosophy dual major at SUNY Oswego, and senior graphic design major Melissa Digiovanna will present and discuss works they created in response to Applebaum’s collection.

Applebaum, a visual arts instructor who works in Fayetteville and Clayton, explained her landscapes motivation in an artist’s statement.

“I am intrigued by the drama of light and moisture mingling in the air creating those silvery spaces where land, sky and water connect, resulting in portrayal of atmosphere rather than of a specific scene,” Applebaum wrote. “The unique characteristics and challenges of each medium (watercolor, acrylic and pastel) influence the final look of each painting.”

Tyler Art Gallery @ Oswego State Downtown, 186 W. First St., is open Wednesdays through Sundays, from noon to 5 p.m.

For more information about the exhibition, contact the SUNY Oswego art department at 315-312-2112. To learn more about Applebaum’s work, visit her website at windyhillstudioarts.com.
