What is the SUNY Oswego Virtual Lab?

The SUNY Oswego Virtual Lab is a pilot project to provide access to computer resources to students and faculty, both on- and off-campus, using either personal or campus-provided computers. The software we have chosen to provide this access is Citrix XenApp, and runs on both Macs and PCs. There is also software for iPhones, iPads, and Android phones and devices, but if you plan to use one of these, you probably should bring your device in so we can set it up together.

The Virtual Lab allows software applications to run on CTS servers, while providing seamless access to these applications on user computers, almost as if it were running right on your own computer.

At the current time, we are providing access to Adobe CS 5 Design Premium (for selected users only) and SPSS 19 (general access), but we can virtualize other applications if desired, and if we are properly licensed for them.

How to access the Virtual Lab:

Do these steps only the first time you log in to the Virtual Lab:

  1. Install Citrix Receiver from http://www.citrix.com/clients. Choose the installer appropriate to your computer (i.e. Windows or Macintosh).
  2. Change your password at https://www.oswego.edu/admin/

      Do these steps each time you log in to the Virtual Lab:

      1. Visit https://vpn.oswego.edu/
      2. Log in using your LakerNet ID and Password (you can leave CTS Domain password blank)
      3. Select "XenApp VDI Virtual Lab - SSO"

            Opening and Saving Files

            Opening and saving files is a bit strange. You will be provided with the familiar open and save dialog boxes, but the "Desktop," "Library," and "Local Drive" actually refer to locations on the Virtual Lab server itself, not on your personal computer.

            To open and save files on your own computer,

            1. click on "Computer" in the file open or save dialog;
            2. choose "C:\ on [name of your computer]."
            3. XenApp will prompt you for access to your hard drive; choose "Read and Write" if you wish to save files, or "Read Only" if you will only be opening them without saving. "No Access" means the Virtual Lab server will not be able to read or write anything to or from your hard drive.

            You may have to navigate a bit to get to your user profile or home directory.

            Please note that in order to save to a removable USB "flash" drive, you should connect the drive to your computer before logging in to the Virtual Lab. If you forget to do this, you can always save your files to your hard drive and copy them to your USB drive manually.
