Proposal for an Assessment Advisory Committee
A Faculty Assembly Standing Committee

Background

SUNY Oswego has recently appointed an Assessment Coordinator to work with departments and programs to ensure that the campus is using the best current approaches to learning outcomes assessment.  We do not, however, currently have an assessment committee within Faculty Assembly governance to recommend appropriate policies and procedures and to review their implementation.  Faculty oversight of learning outcomes assessment is crucial to its success.  The Assessment Advisory Committee will benefit the campus by working with the Assessment Coordinator to ensure campus-wide understanding of and practice of learning outcomes assessment for continuous improvement in student learning.

Charge

  1. Work with the Assessment Coordinator to share information about best practices in assessment with the campus
  2. Work with the coordinator to ensure that SUNY Oswego is meeting assessment and continuous improvement expectations of our accrediting bodies
  3. Make recommendations to Faculty Assembly about policies and procedures related to learning outcomes assessments

 Membership

The standing committee shall consist of eight members:

Seven Faculty members elected by the Faculty Assembly as follows:

  • 3 College of Liberal Arts and Sciences members - one from each of the subdivisions
  • 1 School of Business member
  • 1 School of Communication, Media and the Arts member
  • 1 School of Education member
  • 1 Librarian
  • 3 Ex officio members as follows:
    • Assessment Coordinator
    • General Education director
    • Institutional Research director

This proposal, submitted by the Provost, was approved by the Personnel Policies Council at its November 6, 2009 meeting.
