SUNY Oswego’s Engineering Week events, April 1 to 5, will offer opportunities for high school students to learn more about the field, current students to connect with alumni, interested individuals to meet engineering-related employers and more.

Engineering Week is sponsored by Constellation Energy's local power plants, Fitzpatrick and Nine Mile.

Highlights include:

  • Monday, April 1: Alumni panel, 5:30 to 7 p.m., 170 Shineman Center
  • Wednesday, April 3: Engineering Industry Showcase, 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. Shineman Center atrium
  • Thursday, April 4: Women in Engineering panel, 5:30 to 7 p.m., 170 Shineman Center
  • Friday, April 5: Electrical and Computer Engineering Open House, noon to 3:30 p.m., Shineman Center

“Engineering Week has multiple objectives,” said Mario Bkassiny, chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. “We’re trying to let younger students know more about engineering – what the discipline is, what they can do. We’re trying to attract more students into STEM in general.”

The panels serve as opportunities for current SUNY Oswego and high school students to connect with alumni working in the industry.

The Engineering Industry Showcase –- coordinated by SUNY Oswego’s Career Services Office –- will allow current students to learn about jobs in the field and make direct connections with employers.

Friday’s open houses will provide a pizza lunch, tours, information about the program and a supervised robotics project. Due to space limitations, high school students interested in participating in Friday’s activities should email ece@oswego.edu to register.

Last year’s program was very successful and engaging, Bkassiny said, with the Women in Engineering panel bringing a lot of conversation. “The speakers were experts in their fields and told great stories,” Bkassiny noted.

Bkassiny also credited Jennifer Hill –- the university’s executive director of career services, corporate and foundation relations –- and her team for valuable work with Women in Engineering panel presenters and the Wednesday showcase event.
