Community

SUNY Oswego has several well-established community policing programs which allow officers and students to build positive relationships and enhance their learning experiences.

Officers routinely visit academic buildings and residence halls in an effort to increase public safety and allow for more informal student interaction with officers. Students are encouraged to use these officers as sources for information in many areas including safety, parking, university rules and procedures. Our bicycle patrol has been active since 1993 and offers a quick response to student concerns while also providing a more approachable presence on campus.

Programming is available to campus organizations and residence hall staff for presentation to students in groups of any size. Fatal Vision—or as it is more commonly known, the Beer Goggles—has been a favorite of students and staff for several years. This program utilizes goggles resembling lab goggles which simulate the effects of intoxication allowing the wearer to see and feel the effects of alcohol on their motor skills. Crime prevention is addressed in personal safety and Operation ID programs. These programs provide students with knowledge which is aimed at stopping them from becoming victims of crime. Engravers are provided to students at no charge, allowing them to mark valuables with a number which will help to identify property should it ever be stolen.

University Police officers also instruct a one-credit self-defense class designed for women which offers hands on training in simple to use defense techniques. This class is offered during the regular academic year and provides participants with instruction in sexual assault prevention, legal considerations as well as physical techniques. The information and skills taught help students to make sound decisions regarding their personal safety.

We encourage students to participate in the existing programming and welcome the opportunity to add programming. Members of the college community are invited to suggest additional areas where programming would be beneficial by contacting Chief Scott Swayze by phone at 315.312.5555 or email at [email protected]

Community Awareness

At SUNY Oswego, we take the safety and security of our campus community very seriously. It's a shared commitment among students, faculty, and staff, working together to create a safe and conducive environment for living and learning.

We truly believe that everyone plays a role in ensuring a secure campus, and that's why we encourage all members of the college community to be proactive when it comes to personal safety. During our student and employee orientation programs, we emphasize the importance of being responsible and engaged citizens.

We're proud of the culture we've built, where each person's involvement contributes to the overall safety of our university. Together, we can make our campus an even better place for everyone.
