Sociology

This discipline studies human behavior in groups, how groups are organized, and how institutional structures influence the individual.

Sociology emphasizes the diversity of cultures and human societies, including those groups marginalized or invisible in mainstream cultures. Its scope ranges from the analysis of small-group behavior to the study of the development of large social systems - from the family to education, religion, government and the economy.

Our exceptional faculty and an up-to-date curriculum provide a solid basis in sociological thought and allows our students have the opportunity to acquire knowledge that helps them to think critically and communicate effectively about social structures and the forces that shape individual, group and collective experience.

Get involved

We encourage our students to get involved with the department! Join the Sociology Club to increase awareness of social issues and make a difference. We apply to national conferences on the East Coast, while also having a great time traveling there. The annual Sportsmanship Day Symposium provides an opportunity to present on topic issues. Eligible sociology majors will be inducted into the Sociology Department's Honor Society.
