The Office of the President
May 22, 2020

Dear SUNY Oswego Community Members,

The safety and well-being of our students and employees are of paramount importance. I write to you today to affirm that SUNY Oswego remains steadfast in our commitment “to a learning and working environment in which all members of the campus community may study and work free of sexually harassing language and/or behaviors.” (https://www.oswego.edu/human-resources/file/sexual-harassment

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Title 20, Chapter 38, Sec. 1681 (a) states, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” On May 19, 2020, the U.S. Department of Education published revised regulations under Title IX in the Federal Register. We are carefully reviewing the new regulations and working with the Office of General Counsel to determine how they may impact our current policies.

It is important to stress to all members of our campus, especially those who may have serious concerns about the revised federal regulations, that New York Education Law Article 129-B as well as the Clery Act and the Violence Against Women Act are still applicable and will continue to guide our processes. Our Title IX Coordinator, Deputy Coordinator, and Title IX investigators are committed to providing trauma-informed, fair, and impartial procedures for all parties and will remain thorough, objective and thoughtful to the needs of those involved.

We are #TogetherOz and together we will continue to protect the rights of all and ensure the equitable treatment of each and every member of our campus community.

Regards,

Deborah F. Stanley
President
