The Office of the President
February 7, 2022

Dear Students,

I am excited to announce that the SUNY Oswego fitness centers will be available to all students this semester with no membership fee.

There is traditionally a membership fee charged to utilize Glimmerglass and Cooper Fitness Centers. We are allocating funds from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) that are specifically earmarked for student mental health and wellness to give all students, regardless of financial status, access to the fitness centers. Exercise is something research shows is beneficial for wellness, stress reduction, and for promoting brain activity. We are currently reviewing how SUNY Oswego can maintain students’ no-cost access to the fitness centers beyond this pilot period of the spring 2022 semester.

The HEERF Mental Health and Wellness committee, composed of faculty, staff and students and chaired by Vice President for Student Affairs Kathleen G. Kerr and Vice President for Administration and Finance Victoria Furlong, are currently reviewing additional initiatives. Some initiatives under consideration include enhanced indoor and outdoor spaces for students, library materials, a meditation/prayer room, faculty and staff training, and much more.

Students with existing fitness center memberships will receive reimbursements for spring 2022 fees. For questions about Campus Recreation and Fitness, please email: fitness@oswego.edu.

We will continue to share updates on the committee’s recommendations and approved spending of HEERF funds. We are thrilled to announce students’ no membership fee access to SUNY Oswego’s fitness centers for spring 2022 as the first use of the HEERF Mental Health and Wellness funds.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mary C. Toale
