Support Students in their Transition to Oswego!

The Office of New Student Orientation and the Department of Campus Life are seeking highly-motivated returning student leader volunteers to serve as Laker Links to support the execution of Laker Launch, a one-week extended orientation program for new, incoming first year and transfer students. This leadership position specifically supports the missions of New Student Orientation (NSO) and Campus Life by providing a service that supports the successful academic, cultural, and social transition of new students to the SUNY Oswego community as well as engaging students in out of class experiences through involvement in student organizations, recreational programs and leadership development that allows students to develop and maximize skills and competencies which will give them a comparative advantage upon graduation.

Laker Link Position Description & Information

Key Responsibilities & Expectations

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Assist with the staffing and coordination of Laker Launch by providing structured support and small group facilitation for a group of approximately 15-25 new SUNY Oswego students.

  • Attempt to connect or communicate with every person in your small group and promote regular attendance at Laker Launch events. 

  • Assist with the transition to college for your small group members by creating opportunities for the students in your group to build relationships with each other.

  • Create an environment that emphasizes intentional relationship building, supports a safe and inclusive environment for all identities, celebrates the diversity of our students, and advances the desired learning outcomes of Laker Launch.

  • Attend Laker Launch training sessions to be prepared for your responsibilities during Laker Launch.

  • Attend ALL Laker Launch events with your small group. Arrive on time and stay for the duration unless otherwise directed.

  • Perform other duties relevant to the Laker Launch program as assigned.

Laker Links are Expected to:

  • Abide by all aspects of the College’s Student Code of Conduct for the duration of their service

  • Demonstrate commitment to the mission, vision, and values of SUNY Oswego, NSO, and Campus Life

  • Have the ability to work independently without direct supervision

  • It is strongly desired that Laker Links respond with maturity throughout their employment when faced with challenges --mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, and relational. If leaders need accommodation in dealing with any issues arising from these challenges, they should contact Campus Life professional staff members directly

  • At times, Laker Links may be required to engage in a fair amount of physical activity in excessive heat. Temperatures can consistently reach over 80 degrees in August

  • Laker Links, with or without assistance, will need to lift at least 15 pounds and, at times, carry their possessions on their person-usually in a backpack

  • Use of alcohol, tobacco, and other illicit drugs is strictly prohibited during volunteer service.

Dates of Service

Laker Links must be present for all dates of service outlined below.

  • Laker Link Move-In (On-Campus students, only): Tuesday, August 10 

  • Laker Link Training: Wednesday, August 11 - Saturday, August 14

  • Laker Launch Programming: Sunday, August 15 - Saturday, August 21 

As a Laker Link, you will be serving as an ambassador of SUNY Oswego. We ask that you conduct yourself in a manner that is appropriate. Specifically, your words and actions should reflect a positive and encouraging tone. The use of inappropriate slang words, racial slurs, derogatory comments, etc. are not permitted during Laker Launch. Additionally, promoting or prescribing organizational involvement, or using Laker Launch as a recruitment tool for non-approved school functions will not be tolerated.

Compensation:

  • Paid for on-campus housing during training until August 14, 2021

    • This is only if candidates have an on-campus fall housing assignment 

  • $25 Laker Dining Dollars per day from start of training until August 20, 2021

  • Staff apparel 

  • All required training experiences are paid for

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be a returning undergraduate student who has spent at least one full semester on-campus enrolled in face-to-face or hybrid courses
